Curriculum Vitae

Dr. Norman B. Thot was born in Los Angeles, U.S.A. in 1965 and completed the majority of his schooling and university education in California.


He established THOT PATENT in Ratingen in August, 2010. The firm specializes in United States patent and trademark law, European patent law, and intellectual property transactions.


Prior to establishing THOT PATENT, Dr. Thot worked with the patent law firms of Leydig, Voit & Mayer and as Senior Counsel with Darby & Darby in Frankfurt am Main where his work focused on United States patent law.


From 2001 to 2008, Dr. Thot worked in the Bayer AG Patent Department in Leverkusen, Germany, and subsequently for Lanxess Deutschland GmbH following the spin-off and split-off of the Chemicals Division from the Bayer Group. During his tenure, Dr. Thot held patent and IP contract responsibility for the Performance Chemicals/Functional Chemicals, Inorganic Pigment and Butyl Rubber Business Units as well as for the Lanxess subsidiaries Lanxess Inc. in Sarnia, Canada, Saltigo GmbH (fine chemicals) in Langenfeld, Germany, and Lanxess International S.A. in Fribourg, Switzerland. Dr. Thot also held responsibility for software matters.


As a result of his experience, Dr. Thot possesses widespread expertise and experience in the worldwide prosecution of patent applications and the direct representation of clients before the European Patent Office and the United States Patent and Trademark Office. For his Business Units, Dr. Thot also held responsibility for all IT matters as well as for all IP-related aspects of mergers and acquisitions.


Prior to joining Bayer AG, Dr. Thot worked for law firms in the United States and Germany, most recently for Andersen Legal in Düsseldorf, Germany, where he specialized in mergers and acquisitions.


Dr. Thot is a member of the State Bar of California and the Law Society of England & Wales. He has lived in Ratingen, near Düsseldorf, since 1993.
